Survival foods: meat versus plants

By Terrance Franklin

There are a variety of considerations to take into mind when figuring out specifically what the best food products to consume for survival are. There is obviously the sum of calories required, if you're going to be surviving, you'll need energy to move on.

You'll find variations in the volume of calories you get from food. Normally, meat is significantly denser in calories as compared to plant matter. Think about this, will you be more full after eating a steak or a dish of spinach? Some plants contain a large amount of water, that will not supply many calories but is critical for remaining alive in dry environments.

While getting animal meat is better coming from a calorie point of view, it can be a big risk. It usually takes a large amount of calories in order to capture an animal. Can you think of the kind of workout you would get chasing down a deer? Even if you catch it, you'll be very fatigued and if you don't catch it you'll have spent all of that for nothing. With a survival situation, it's a big risk but a huge reward.

There's also the danger factor associated with pursuing critters. In one of my favorite tv shows, Dual Survival, the host Cody Lundin often criticizes his partner Dave Canterbury for taking a great number of risks. Dave does loads of crazy things like hunting alligators with selfmade spears so he's a bit of an extreme case.

Back to eating meat though, in long term survival situations the protein can be essential. Without protein, your muscles will waste away which will make it more difficult for you to maneuver across land or defend yourself if you have the need. So it's essential to get some form of protein in order to stay alive. Meat will do this better than anything else.

If you find yourself catching anything, the easiest method to ensure that it stays portable is simply by turning it into into jerky or smoking it. By setting up a fire, you can not only smoke your animal products but indicate to other people that you are in the area. Smoke is usually a sure sign to any would be rescuers that are trying to find you.

So in short, it's best to have a combination of foods for survival. Calories will get you energy but you need protein to stay fit if you're going to survive in the long run.
