Considering Using Soy For Hot Flashes

By Laura McFadden

Many females, when going through stages of menopause, will visit their family doctor and seek help to alleviate some of the symptoms. In many instances, the doctor will prescribe a course of drugs designed to reduce night sweats and other symptoms. A large number of women are now looking into more natural solutions and if you are thinking of using soy for hot flashes there are a few important things to be considered beforehand.

All general practitioners will have a list of medication that has been approved and they can prescribe to help them combat some of the unpleasant symptoms of menopause. Hormone replacement therapy is the most common of these and is widely used. A lot of HRT users have experienced side effects when taking it and the natural remedies could be better suited to these patients.

In recent years, many females have started using soy products in their diet to help with hot flashes and night sweats. Soy is very high in estrogens and this stops the body producing the chemicals that cause the sweating. It is not officially approved by doctors and the professional medics but many doctors have advised women to use it while the in depth research continues.

There have been a large number of studies to look into whether using soy regularly is bad for the health. It has been widely reported that women that have used it for a while have suffered from some unpleasant digestive problems but in most cases the symptoms are mild. There is still a lot of research to be done which should clarify the risks, and as yet, these findings are not clear.

Other medical reports that have been published say that taking soy on a regular basis can increase the risks of cancer. Women who have previously suffered from breast cancer have been advised not to take soy due to the estrogens that it contains. Other studies have claimed that it prevents cancer so these results are conflicting at the moment. If you have ever been diagnosed with cancer it is advisable to consult a doctor before you include these products in your diet.

Soy is not just contained in milk and there are some other ways that it can be included in your diet. Products such as hot dogs, burgers and cereals are now available that contain it. Many of the vegetarian products that are sold in supermarkets also contain soy such as food made with tofu that is widely available.

If you decide to use alternative therapies to combat the unpleasant symptoms of menopause there are some things to be aware of. If you have been using soy for a period of time and there are no improvements then it may be unsuitable for you. If it does help, and there are no adverse side effects, there is no reason why you cannot continue with this method of therapy.

Prior to using any treatment you should ask the advice of your family physician. A healthy diet and taking regular exercise is also recommended to help you to respond to your treatments better. There is a lot of information to be found online regarding soy, and it is a good idea to read as much of this as you can.
