Elements In Modest Islamic Clothing

By Dorothy Walker

One of the most widely practiced culture in the world is Islam. It is renowned for its strict regulations in their attire and mode of worship as well. However, these regulations differ with the different factions within it and which most are considered to be lenient enough. This article details elements in modest Islamic clothing believers are expected to take heed of.

Men are supposed to check on haram practices. Anything against their teaching is regarded as haram. Men, in particular, are required to avoid silvers and silk which are meant to be worn by females as decorations. Their underneath attires should be done tailored above their ankles. Having them at that position indicates their humility since they will not be easily soiled. It is believed one who intends to soil their clothing does this out of pride knowing they have different garments to change to.

Clothing is done with the right intentions, and there must be no imitation of other members. It is against sharia laws to put on attire which depicts wealth or undermines your fellow brother capabilities to afford a similar garment. One is expected not to imitate non-Islam or wear something similar to the female believers.

Women, on the other hand, are required to cover their whole body expect from their face and hands. The respective hijab should not be transparent. In some subgroups, they are strictly made to wear black clothing made out of a heavy material. In others, they have the freedom to choose any color as long it is not transparent and is loose enough.

Their head cover varies with the respective subgroup. Conservative factions prefer the burka which completely covers the whole head and leaving a mesh or grill for the woman to see through. The lenient group makes use of the hijab and dupatta which both are veil which is separate from the hijab. The niqab is another type worn by conservatives which is an extension of the hijab but leaves out the oval part of the head.

There are no defined rules regarding their underneath dress, but one is simply expected to cover their body parts. One can only expose their bodies to their close male relatives and children who are have not yet reached their puberty. This consideration is strictly meant for females and males within non-Muslim members.

All the same, these regulations have changed depending on western countries laws. Most have banned the use of niqabs and burkas since they conceal faces which they expect them to be exposed for security purpose. Others have intermarried with other cultures although it is greatly discouraged but have managed to adopt into new ideologies as well.

Change of their fashion does not mean they have completely adopted the western culture. They have only adjusted their fashion in a manner that it still maintains its expectation. Men wear simple but decent western clothing with which identifies them as Muslim. Most women have maintained the traditional head cover with scarfs, but they can afford to wear a loose, casual wear which is equally relevant to the regulations.
