Keratoconus Treatment NY And The Options Available

By Dennis Wright

Keratoconus is a condition which is normally experienced whenever the cornea thins and bulges outwards into a cone shape. This leads to vision that is blurred and may lead to glare insensitivity. It is a condition which affects both eyes and normally affects people between ages 10 and 25. It progresses gradually for about 10 years. When considering Keratoconus treatment NY residents need to be versed with available options.

Treatment for the condition is dependent on how severe it is and how fast it is progressing. When it is mild, eyeglasses and contact lenses can be used. For majority of persons, the cornea becomes stable after several years. For people with the moderate versions, it is unlikely that they will experience vision complications or need further treatment. For some people, the cornea will become scarred or it will be difficult wearing contacts. This will call for surgery.

There are different types of lenses that can be used. Soft contact lenses can correct blurry vision when still in the early stages. Nevertheless, the prescription of glasses should be changed as cornea shape changes. If the soft contacts do not work, one may need to opt for hard contact lenses. These tend to feel uncomfortable in the early stages but one gets used to them over time. They rectify vision well and are able to be custom made so as to fit the cornea.

Hybrid lenses have rigid centers as well as soft ring around the outside so as to increase comfort. If you are not able to tolerate hard contacts, this is a good option. AS regards scleral lenses, they come in handy for irregular changes in shape in the cornea. This happens after the condition advances. Instead of resting on the cornea as is the case with conventional lenses, they are placed on white section of the eyes, known as the sclera. They are placed such that they never touch the cornea.

In the case of corneal scarring of corneas, surgery is the option. The same is the case in cases when vision is adversely depreciated and you are unable to wear lenses. There are various forms of surgery available and the one used depends on where the bulge is and severity of the condition.

Corneal inserts are one type of surgery. For the procedure, the doctor will place clear, tiny and crescent shaped inserts that are made of plastic into the cornea so as to flatten that cone. It will also support the shape of the cornea, thereby improving vision. The inserts serve to restore shape of the cornea and slow progression of keratoconus. Besides, it makes it easy to fit contact lenses and tolerate them.

Corneal transplants are the other option. They come in handy when there is corneal scarring and extreme thinning. There will either be transplanting of only sections of the cornea or all of it. The recovery takes time, some times as much as one year, during which you are required to wear contact lenses to be able to have clear vision. It takes a couple of years for full recovery.

Corneal transplant is very successful. There are however some possible complications. They include graft rejection, worsening of vision and astigmatism. There people will not be able to wear contact lenses after the treatment.
