To become a licensed, chartered, or registered surveyor, one usually needs a degree or higher qualification than that. Joining a professionals association usually require passing a certain qualification exam. Besides an exam, attaining a certifying status allows one to join a professional association. Licensed surveyors plan and manage surveys. There are standards that all the work they do or work that is done under their supervision must meet.

Within the national borders, there are requirements that have to be attained before one is to be registered as a surveyor. Some of these requirements include having a degree or a higher level of education. They should also have on-job training and must have passed the comprehensive exam before being licensed. The requirements differ from nation to nation but some tend to be similar.
