Facts Concerning Dry Ice Blasting Services

By James Smith

This is a method of abrasive blasting that utilizes carbon dioxide to clean a surface. Dry ice is a form of carbon dioxide that is solidified. The process is accelerated in a pressurized air stream using a pump that is directed in to a surface that needs cleaning. It is a safe and environmentally friendly method since it does not contain any chemicals that can be harmful to the persons doing the process. Today, many businesses offer Dry Ice Blasting Services.

When using this method, dry ice pellets are propelled on the surface at a high velocity. There is minimum abrasion happening to the surface when the pellets come in contact with it ta high speed. In comparison to other blasting materials such as sand, dry ice pellets are quite soft. Sublimation of the pellets happens upon impact when heat is generated.

Shear stress occurs when a lot of heat is absorbed during sublimation process. The application of stress improves the level of cleaning. There is less heat on the top than the underlying surface. This causes easily flaking in the film of dirt on top. This therefore leaves the surface clean. The surface needs to have good thermal conductivity in order to get effective results.

There are different methods that can be used. Two-hose and single-hose dry ice blasting are examples of the methods that can be used. Compressed air and dry ice pellets come from different hoses in the two-hose method. Using the venture effect, the compressed air and the pellets are both sucked out. In single-hose method, compression of air and delivering of pellets is done using a single hose. This method is not as effective as the two-hose system.

The single-hose systems provide more aggressive cleaning hence they can clean up heavier dirt layers and faster cleaning. They can also use longer hose compared to the two hose without a drop in the pressure at any point. Single-hose has a feature that enables them to make use of a quickly cycling air lock. This helps in prevention of potential dangers associated with the blasting.

The dry ice blasting is suitable for cleaning special equipment such as those used in food processing. It is suitable in the removal of micro-organisms which cannot be seen by naked eyes. Because there are no cases of fire outbreaks and related dangers, it can be used with other solvents used in cleaning. Apart from cleaning of food processing equipment it is also used in the cleaning of surfaces in the aerospace industry. This is because of lack of residue deposit after the process.

Dry ice blasting uses a combination of forces that enables a surface to be cleaned without any damage. It does not leave any residue since it utilizes the sublimation principle hence no harmful secondary waste is left behind.

When performing this process, it is vital for one to consider safety. Whenever the process occurs in a place that is poorly ventilated, carbon dioxide concentration can become life threatening. Chocking and death can result. Proper ventilation is required together with proper gear to prevent noise.
