Make Yard Sale Finds Fabulous With Decorative Painting Patterns

By Jose Turner

Often people look at craft renovation shows in awe at the designs experts are able to make with just a few brush strokes. While some things take years of practice, just about anyone can give new life to a decorative or functional item to be used in the house. All it takes is a few coats of paint, the right clothing, and protection of valuables along with a few decorative painting patterns in the desired shape or size.

Using a pattern, as opposed to masking tape, to create designs is one of the easiest ways to create consistency of the design throughout. Even simple patterns, such as basic lines or circles, should have a guide or template. While masking or painters tape may be less expensive, an amateur would still have to use a tape measure to ensure that everything is even.

Most people would go with a favorite color but sometimes using a combination of colors is the most fun. Let us say that the color scheme of a room is hot pink, navy blue, and pale yellow. Assuming that the blue will be the base color throughout the room, the colors used in the pattern may use blue as the accent color instead.

Using various colors on a project can either enhance it or give it a psychedelic look. The latter can be fun in a room that is either neutral or uses at least two of the main colors when creating home decor. For those who do not care much for the traditional painting process, other techniques like sponge painting can be effective without a lot of worry about formality.

Choosing color combinations for a room may be personal preference, or if a person wants to have a professional look, using a color wheel is a great idea. Many that are found online explain how colors are grouped together and how these groups can be used together. There are also art and decor magazines that can be of assistance.

The great thing about most decor templates or patterns they can be used on multiple surfaces. Starting with smaller items is a good way to get acquainted with the painting process. However, moving on to advanced projects require more planning, especially if it is a room or space that is used often.

There are also more complex surfaces in terms of preparation. Often metal requires a primer to stay on surfaces permanently. When working with a wood project, it helps to get educated about different type, as some may benefit from staining instead of color. In some cases, a pattern may be compatible with the different shades of stain but there are books that can act also as a guide.

Using these tools can also be applied to the flea market or yard sale items, old furnishings, or items that are being repurposed. While it helps to have a vision, some people have more fun creating as they go along. Even if it takes longer than a few hours, it is about making something that will look nice.
