General Protocol For A Railroad Car Kosher Washout CA Orthodox Union Rabbis Will Verify

By Frank Nelson

There are strict rules when it comes to most things that involve the Jewish faith. You will find specific instructions from God to the Hebrews in the Old Testament regarding everything from the food they eat to the hours that they worship. Orthodox Jews still follow these laws. When transporting Orthodox products there are very strict procedures to follow. Before they can be transported by rail car for example, a kosher washout CA orthodox union rabbis can verify must be conducted.

A kosherization is only required for those cars that have previously hauled non-kosher products or products from unknown sources. A kosherization is cleaning that is temperature specific. It must be carried out before any kosher product can be placed inside the car. An orthodox union rabbi must be present during the kosherization in order to verify that the procedure was handled properly.
Before the process can begin the rail car has to be thoroughly washed. This includes gauges and valves that come in contact with the interior of the car. There aren't specific requirements for the washing other than the process must include using a caustic detergent that is strong enough to completely rid the car of any residue of previous products carried in it.

No part of the rail car's interior, or the equipment in it, can be heated in the 24 hour period preceding the kosherization. If hot water is needed for the initial washing, then the wash must take place at least 24 hours before the kosherization begins. Regular maintenance, and any necessary repairs, may be conducted at this time, at long at there is no hot water involved.

There are two ways rail cars can be kosherized, by steam or by baking. The steam method requires that the entire interior and siphon pipe be steamed. The vapor exiting the pipe must maintain a temperature of two hundred degrees for thirty seconds. The blow off valve, and any other interior gauges and valves have to be boiled at a temperature of two hundred degrees or heated in an oven.

To bake the interior of the car, the metal heat must reach four hundred degrees and remain at that temperature for two hours. The blow off valve, manway lid, and siphon pipe has to be heated the same way. It is permissible to place them in the car while it is heating. They may also be put in a separate oven.

If the car has to be wiped down with oil after a kosherization, the crew can only use oil approved by the orthodox union. Once the kosherization is complete, the seal numbers for any valve the products will pass through must be sent to the orthodox union office. After these are received, the office issues a kosher certificate.

Once everyone understands these procedures,

Once everyone understands these procedures, they can be done routinely. It is very important to closely follow protocol. Even in a instance where a field rabbi is not required, it is usually a good idea to insist of having one present.
