Usage Of Tungsten Carbide Parts

By Maria Wallace

Most modern production that involves metal relies on tungsten carbide. People prefer this variety of metal widely due to its numerous properties such as resistance to high temperatures, high melting points, resistance to acid and low resistance to electricity. The production of this metal involves reacting tungsten in carbon in high temperatures. Below are uses of tungsten carbide parts.

Production of cutting tools. Traditionally, cutting tools relied on stainless steel in their manufacture. However, tungsten carbide brings a cost-effective option that one can consider. It has high abrasion rates which can make it withstand cutting at high temperature. They also create a sharper edge that makes it ideal for tools that need precision. Such products require the addition of cobalt which serves as its matrix.

Production of ammunition. One can use tungsten carbide to make armour-piercing ammunition instead of uranium is not applicable. Their great hardness and density make them ideal for such an application. It is common with high-velocity gun ammunition and light armour arms ammunition as well.

Production of mining tools. Mining tools have been relying on stainless steel for quite a long duration. However, stainless steel tends to have a weak point and cannot withstand hard materials and fast drilling. Therefore, companies involved in the manufacture of mining tools consider this material due to its hardness and high melting point. It is also recyclable making it available in the market throughout. The recycling process can involve a large mass of products and maintains the quality of the tools.

Ideal for nuclear reflectors. The use of tungsten carbide in nuclear reflectors came as a result of an accident during a laboratory test. One of the professional involved in the testing happened to drop a brick of the material in a plutonium reactor sphere creating neutron reflection. The reaction produced a sub-critical reaction which results in high energy.

It is used to make jewelry. This material has become popular in the manufacture of wedding rings over the recent years. It is quite harder compared with gold and can create a remarkable appearance when polished well. It can also make pendants, ear ring and other jewelry as long as the cutting process goes well. It is a cost-effective option if you compare with gold.

Surgical tools production. The production of tools used in surgeries requires precision and a lot of care. The production process requires a material that cannot pit or rust easily. Tungsten carbide has become a common tool used in such products due to its properties. However, their usage involves the edges. Other parts such as the stem use metal such as uranium and stainless steel. One can re-sharpen the edges when they wear out without worrying about pitting.

Usage in sports. There is various sports usage that one can rely on this metal. However, common usage includes the making of cleats, ski-poles, shoeing of racing horses and making motorcycle and bicycle tires. They provide a remarkable grip on the surface and guarantees the longevity of the edges that they make. The product used to make the sports product have a high sturdiness as well.
