By Florine Ross

Shyness is a problem that many people are affected by and can hinder a person both socially and professionally, creating even bigger issues. The following tips on how to overcome shyness will certainly help to lessen, if not eliminate the effects.

Overcoming shyness requires a certain amount of social interaction, so you have to make sure that you are around others as much as possible to enhance your social skills and raise your confidence levels. Meeting a variety of new people with different life experiences will inevitably raise your chances of finding new friends with whom you have much in common.

Putting yourself in different situations can happen by taking up a new hobby or extracurricular activity. Join a local club that promotes physical activities in a group setting such as hiking, or sign up for classes learning a new skill. Go to the gym or local swimming pool once or twice a week; familiarizing yourself with a new environment will ensure that you are comfortable when meeting new people.

Don't push yourself so far out of your comfort zone with the activity you choose to do that you put yourself under pressure to be someone you are not. Choosing something you already have skills at or that you find fun and entertaining will be much more rewarding to your confidence. It will making overcoming your shyness not seem like such a task and will give you some experience in a particular hobby at the very least that you can take with you.

Not only should you enjoy any activity you choose to undertake, but it should also be something that makes you feel good in terms of comfort. It's difficult to be shy when you are relaxed and at ease with a situation, meaning that you can interact more easily with others with less pressure or thought to your shyness.

Low self-esteem is a huge contributing factor to shyness, so if you don't think very positively about yourself, you will never overcome it. Daily affirmations - in the mirror in the morning or evening or for the entire day as you conduct your affairs - will help you to see yourself in a better light, giving you more confidence as a result. Being more confident in yourself will attract the attention of others who wish to get to know you.

Spend more time with people who have the kind of confidence you would like to have. Their attitudes towards certain social settings will influence the way you behave, as long as you learn from them and don't let yourself shrink into the background of their confidence.

Stick to what you know in conversation. Surely there are things you feel passionately about, and letting that show through discussion with others will allow your inner confident self to emerge. The comfort level of speaking on what you know about will put you in a zone that leaves others seeing you as cool and collected. When more people join in the conversation, this is an opportunity for you to further overcome shyness by being in a group discussion. This will invite new ideas as well as give you the chance to form new relationships.
